Recipe: Thai Green Papaya Salad - Som Jam Thai

The origin Thai Green Papaya salad is a really hot, robust, healthy salad with additions of Thai basil and peanuts. It comes from Isaan, a region in the Northeast of Thailand. It is the most popular meal of Thai people living there and known as Som Jam Thai. For the taste of most Western people the origin Som Jam Thai is too spicy. The recipe below you can use to create Thai Green Papaya salad that is right for your taste.

Ingredients:

350 grams Green papaya
50 grams Carrot
50 grams Unsalted toasted peanuts
50 grams Dried shrimps
3 or more Fresh chili peppers

Dressing:

55 grams Lime juice
35 grams Thai fish sauce
55 grams Sugar (preferable brown sugar)
10 grams Chopped garlic

How to prepare Thai Green Papaya Salad

  • First wash and peel carrots and green papaya. Then grate them into long thin strips. Next you should crush or grind unsalted toasted peanut.
  • After you’ve done this, soak dried shrimp in water and drip off well. Then dry them on a baking sheet in your oven and next grind in a grinder or a food processor.
  • Next thing you have to do is washing whole fresh chili peppers and crush them with the flat part of a knife blade.
  • Now you can get making your dressing. Mix all the dressing ingredients together, stir until sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Just ahead of serving, mix the prepared shredded carrot and green papaya with the dressing, add crushed fresh chili pepper, add ground dried shrimp and crushed peanuts. Don’t forget to keep some ground dried shrimp and crushed peanuts to handle your salad.
  • Serve your salad on a lettuce leaf and coat with the remaining ground shrimp and crushed peanuts.
  • For those of you who prefer Green Thai Papaya salad more spicier, you may add more chili pepper.
